Does God still speak to us today? Many of us wonder if we’ve ever truly heard His voice. This is the story of how I learned to recognize when God was speaking to me—and how you can, too.
The Question I Couldn’t Answer
For years, I wondered if God was speaking to me.
I heard people say things like:
- “God told me to do this.”
- “I felt God’s voice leading me.”
- “God spoke to my heart.”
And every time, I thought, What does that even mean?
I had never heard an actual voice.
I had never seen a sign written in the sky.
I had never received some miraculous message that made everything clear.
So, for a long time, I assumed that maybe God just didn’t speak to me.
But then, something happened that changed my understanding forever.
The Moment Everything Changed
It was one of the hardest seasons of my life.
I had just gone through a painful breakup, one that left me questioning everything.
Had I made the right choices?
Did God even care?
Why had things fallen apart when I had prayed for them to work?
One night, completely exhausted, I sat alone in my room and whispered, “God, if You’re real, if You’re listening… I need to hear from You.”
I wasn’t expecting an answer.
But what happened next caught me completely off guard.
The Voice That Wasn’t a Voice
I sat there in silence, waiting for something—anything—to happen.
And then…
A thought entered my mind.
It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t a dramatic revelation.
It was quiet, almost like a whisper inside my heart.
“Trust Me.”
That was it.
Two simple words.
At first, I thought, Maybe it’s just my own thoughts.
But then I noticed something different.
This thought didn’t feel like my own voice.
It didn’t come with fear, doubt, or confusion—the way my usual thoughts did.
Instead, it brought a peace I couldn’t explain.
Like somehow, deep inside, I already knew it was true.
And that was the moment I realized something important:
God doesn’t always speak the way we expect.
How God Speaks (And Why We Miss It)
I had spent years waiting for a sign—some big, undeniable moment where God would speak to me directly.
But I had completely missed the way God actually speaks.
Because the truth is, God rarely speaks in a loud, booming voice.
Instead, He speaks:
✅ Through Scripture – Have you ever read a Bible verse and felt like it was meant exactly for you? That’s God speaking.
✅ Through People – Ever had a friend give you advice that hit you in a deep way? That’s God using them to reach you.
✅ Through Peace (or Restlessness) – Sometimes, God speaks through the way you feel. A deep sense of peace? A clear warning in your heart? That’s His voice guiding you.
✅ Through Circumstances – Doors opening at the right time, unexpected opportunities, even closed doors—God speaks through the way things unfold.
✅ Through the Still, Small Voice – That quiet whisper in your heart? The one that aligns with truth, love, and peace? That’s Him.
The Key to Hearing God: Learning to Listen
After that night, I started paying attention.
And I realized that God had been speaking to me all along—I just hadn’t been listening.
I had been too distracted by my own worries.
I had been too impatient to sit in silence.
I had been too focused on what I wanted to hear, instead of what God was actually saying.
But when I started slowing down, praying, and actually listening, something changed.
I didn’t always hear clear words, but I started recognizing His presence.
- A Bible verse would stand out in a way that felt personal.
- A friend would say something that confirmed what I had been praying about.
- I’d feel peace about a decision that didn’t make sense logically—but deep inside, I just knew it was right.
The more I listened, the more I understood:
God is always speaking.
The real question is, are we paying attention?
How You Can Know When God is Speaking to You
If you’ve ever wondered, Is this God or just my own thoughts?, here are a few things that helped me:
1. Does It Align with Scripture?
God will never tell you something that goes against His Word.
If the message in your heart matches the wisdom of the Bible, it’s likely Him speaking.
📖 “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27
2. Does It Bring Peace?
God’s voice brings peace, not fear. Even if He’s calling you to something difficult, His guidance won’t make you feel anxious—it will come with a sense of clarity and trust.
📖 “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” – 1 Corinthians 14:33
3. Does It Keep Coming Back?
God often repeats His message in different ways—through Scripture, conversations, circumstances, and inner conviction.
If you keep hearing the same message over and over, pay attention.
📖 “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” – Isaiah 30:21
4. Does It Require Faith?
God’s voice often leads us out of our comfort zone.
If what you’re hearing requires trust, surrender, or obedience—it might just be Him calling you forward.
📖 “Walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
God is Speaking. Are You Listening?
That night, when I heard “Trust Me”, I didn’t get all the answers I wanted.
I didn’t suddenly know exactly what to do.
But I knew I wasn’t alone.
And that peace changed everything.
Since then, I’ve stopped expecting God to speak in dramatic ways.
Instead, I listen for Him in the quiet moments.
In the words of Scripture.
In the advice of wise friends.
In the gentle nudges of my heart.
And I’ve learned that He was never silent—I was just too busy to hear Him.
If you’ve been waiting to hear from God, my advice is simple:
Be still. Pay attention. Trust Him.
Because sometimes, His voice isn’t in the storm—it’s in the whisper.
