Fear often keeps us from trusting God’s plan, but His ways are greater than we can imagine. This is the story of how I learned to let go of fear and trust in something bigger than myself.
Fear Had Controlled My Life
For as long as I could remember, fear had been a constant presence in my life.
I was afraid of failure—so I played it safe.
I was afraid of disappointment—so I avoided taking risks.
I was afraid of what I couldn’t control—so I tried to control everything.
I told myself that as long as I planned carefully, worked hard, and avoided unnecessary risks, I could keep things under control.
But the truth was, I wasn’t living—I was just surviving.
And then, one day, everything changed.
The Job That Wasn’t Supposed to End
I had spent five years working for a company I thought I’d retire from.
It was stable. It was predictable. It was safe.
Then, out of nowhere, I got the news:
“We’re restructuring. Your position has been eliminated.”
My heart sank.
I had no backup plan. No savings. No idea what to do next.
Panic set in.
What if I can’t find another job?
What if I fail?
What if I lose everything?
For weeks, I wrestled with anxiety, trying to figure out what went wrong.
I prayed—more out of desperation than faith.
“God, what am I supposed to do now?”
I didn’t get an answer right away.
But in the silence, a different question came to mind—one that stopped me in my tracks.
“What if this isn’t happening to you… but for you?”
The Fear That Almost Held Me Back
A few days later, an opportunity came my way.
It wasn’t another corporate job. It wasn’t a step back into my comfort zone.
It was something completely unexpected.
A friend reached out about a nonprofit organization looking for someone to help with leadership and development.
It wasn’t what I had planned for my life. It wasn’t what I thought I wanted.
But deep inside, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time—curiosity, a spark, a nudge in my heart.
And that’s when the fear came rushing back.
“You can’t take this job—it’s not stable.”
“You don’t have experience in this field.”
“What if you fail?”
I was so close to saying no.
But something inside me whispered, Trust me.
And for the first time in a long time, I chose to trust instead of fear.
God’s Plan Was Bigger Than I Could See
I took the job.
Not because I wasn’t afraid—but because I realized that if I kept letting fear decide my life, I’d never see what God had planned for me.
And looking back now?
I see God’s fingerprints all over it.
✅ That “unexpected” opportunity led me to a career that filled me with purpose.
✅ That job I lost? It was never meant to be my final destination.
✅ The skills I thought were useless? God used them in ways I never imagined.
God’s plan wasn’t to take something away from me.
It was to lead me somewhere greater—but I never would have seen it if I had let fear hold me back.
The Truth About Fear and God’s Plan
I used to think that faith meant never feeling afraid.
But now, I understand something deeper:
Faith isn’t the absence of fear.
Faith is choosing to trust God’s plan even when you’re afraid.
Fear will always be there.
- Fear will tell you to stay where it’s comfortable.
- Fear will make you doubt God’s promises.
- Fear will try to convince you that you need all the answers before you take a step.
But God doesn’t ask us to have all the answers.
He just asks us to trust Him, one step at a time.
How to Trust God When Fear Feels Overwhelming
If you’re struggling with fear right now, wondering if God has a plan for you, here’s what helped me:
1. Remember That God Sees the Bigger Picture
What looks like a setback to you might be a setup for something greater.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11
2. Don’t Wait for Fear to Disappear—Move Forward Anyway
Courage isn’t about waiting until you feel brave.
It’s about trusting God even when you don’t feel ready.
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” – Psalm 56:3
3. Pray and Listen for God’s Guidance
Sometimes, God doesn’t reveal the whole plan at once.
He just gives us the next step.
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” – Isaiah 30:21
Fear is Small. God is Bigger.
Looking back, I can see it so clearly now.
I was never meant to stay in that job.
I was never meant to live a life controlled by fear.
God’s plan was so much bigger than I could see at the time.
And the same is true for you.
Maybe right now, you’re facing something uncertain. Maybe you feel stuck, afraid to take a step forward.
But let me tell you this:
Your fear is not bigger than God’s plan.
Whatever you’re facing, whatever you’re afraid of—trust that God is leading you somewhere good.
Even if you don’t see it yet.
Even if it doesn’t make sense.
Even if you’re afraid.
Because when you finally step out in faith?
You’ll realize that God had it all planned out the whole time.
